FAQs About Transfer & Adult Student SOAR
- What is ARA?
- ARA stands for Advising and Registration by Appointment. ARA allows all new transfer and adult students to meet with an advisor on an appointment schedule prior to SOAR.
To make an appointment, simply locate and contact your academic unit by clicking here. Like SOAR, ARA is required for all new transfer and adult students.
-
What if I am not admitted prior to the ARA window and haven’t registered for classes before SOAR? Will there be time at SOAR to meet with an advisor?
- Yes! There will be time allotted at the end of the day for those admitted after the end of ARA.
- Do I still need to attend SOAR if I have all of my classes scheduled?
- Yes! SOAR is a mandatory, full day program for all transfer and adult students and intended to follow ARA. We know based on research that students who attend SOAR do better academically as well as socially than those who do not attend.
- Will I meet other transfer and adult students at SOAR?
- Yes! There will be opportunities for transfer and adult students to meet new students in small group interactions, and have time with a current transfer and adult student as well.
- Do I need to stay overnight for SOAR?
- No. SOAR for transfer and adult students is a one-day program. If you are traveling to Greensboro from a distance and need to make overnight accommodations, please check our hotel listing.
- Should I bring money for meals?
- No. A continental breakfast and lunch in the Caf will be provided for you during SOAR. If you will want to purchase other snacks or UNCG Bookstore items, you’ll want to bring money for that. We do not recommend bringing large amounts of cash and if you need cash once you are on campus, there are ATM machines in the Elliott University Center.
- Should I bring a family member to SOAR?
- Yes! If you have an adult family member who is able to attend SOAR with you, we encourage it. They can assist you in gathering information and supporting you in your transition to UNCG. There is a parent/family SOAR program which runs concurrently with our student program. Please note that we do not allow friends to accompany students throughout the student program and that there are no services or programs for young children.
- Am I invited to Rawkin' Welcome Week events also?
- Yes! As a new student to our campus, we welcome you to participate in UNCG’s Rawkin’ Welcome Week. You can look forward to The Chancellor’s Convocation, Charlie’s Block Party and other great events for you to get to know your peers and UNCG.
- I'm interested in getting involved on campus. How will I learn about resources?
- We provide lots of opportunities for you to learn about getting involved on campus, the first beginning as early as SOAR. We host the Spartan EXPO, an information fair, during SOAR. There are also offices on campus you can utilize as well, including the Office for Adult Students and Campus Activities and Programs. Our Web site is always a great place to start.
- How do I request assistance or find out more information the Office of Disability Services?
- Please contact us if you have any individual needs relating to a disability; you may also contact UNCG’s Office of Disability Services.
