FAQs for Parents and Family of Transfer & Adult Students

Is there a SOAR program for Parents and Family members?
Yes. The Parent/Family Transfer & Adult SOAR program runs concurrently with the student program. Please visit the Dates link in the menu, or click here for the Transfer & Adult SOAR dates.
My student has attended other institutions before UNCG, so I am familiar with college. Should I still attend SOAR?
Yes. Despite your student’s previous college experiences, the programs and services offered here are unique to UNCG.  SOAR is a wonderful opportunity to learn about everything UNCG has to offer!
I am the spouse of an incoming student.  Will there be anything for me at SOAR?
Yes.  We encourage parents, family members, and spouses to attend SOAR. We believe that students will be more successful if they have a support network.  SOAR will equip you with the information you need to effectively support your student in the transition to college as well as throughout the college experience.
Will I be with my student during SOAR?
You will have the opportunity to learn with, and apart, from your student.  The program is designed for some sessions to be hosted together while other sessions are separate from the student. This gives us the opportunity to address the unique priorities and questions you have. Please note, that advising and registration is for the student only, and family members are not allowed to be with the student during this process.
Are reservations required to attend the Parent/Family SOAR program?
Yes. Reservations and payments are required in advance. Reservations and payments may be made on-line through the same UNCGenie system that your student will use to make his or her reservation. Reservations and payments not made in advance are subject to availability and late charges. Please note you will need your student, with his or her student ID number, to make the reservation. Visit How to Make Your Reservation for details.
Is there a fee for parents and family members to attend SOAR?
Yes.  The SOAR guest fee is $25.00 per guest.  All guest fees for SOAR are required in advance. Payments must be received in our office before your SOAR session.   If you are mailing a payment, we encourage sending payments at least three weeks in advance to allow adequate time for delivery and processing. Any payments not received in our office by your SOAR session must be paid at check-in and a late fee may apply.   We cannot accommodate credit card payments at our check-in site.

Online credit card payments are preferred for guests and you may make those payments through the SOAR reservation system. However, checks and money orders are accepted, made payable to “UNCG Orientation and Family Programs,” and mailed to:

UNCG Orientation & Family Programs/SOAR
P.O. Box 26170
245 EUC
Greensboro, NC 27402

Please include your student's ID on your check or money order!
Do I need to stay overnight for SOAR?
No. SOAR for transfer and adult guests and students is a one-day program. If you are traveling to Greensboro from a distance and need to make overnight accommodations, please check our hotel listing.
How is my SOAR fee for the Parent/Family Program used?
Your orientation fee provides you with SOAR session materials, a continental breakfast following check-in, lunch, and parking in the Walker Avenue parking deck during SOAR. Additionally, the fee is used to cover administrative costs for the program. Without your fee, the Parent/Family SOAR program would not be possible.
Will I need money for meals?
No. A continental breakfast and lunch in the Caf will be provided for you during SOAR. If you will want to purchase other snacks or UNCG Bookstore items, you will want to bring money for your purchases. We do not recommend bringing large amounts of cash with you and if you need cash once you are on campus, there are ATM machines in the Elliott University Center.
Is the Parent/Family SOAR program appropriate for children?
No.  Although we recognize and appreciate how valuable the entire family is to your student's academic success, the Parent/Family SOAR program is intended for adult family members and other individuals who serve an important role in the student's transition to college. Parents are encouraged to keep young children at home, as child care cannot be provided.
Is assistance offered during SOAR for Parents/Family Members with disabilities?
Guests requesting accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) should contact the Office of Disability Services at 336-334-5440. All SOAR sessions are accessible and the Office of Disability Services may provide interpreting services and information in alternative formats as needed. Please note that all services and/or equipment considered of a personal nature are the responsibility of the guest. Examples of this: transportation to and from cars/buses and/or the supply and use of a wheel chair. Shuttles are provided from the Walker Avenue parking deck to check-in and back. You may visit the Office of Disability Services website for more details.
How can I find out more information about UNCG and the Parent/Family resources for the college transition?
Visit the Parent/Family Association Web site to find out how to join the association as well as access additional resources.
