FAQs About Freshman SOAR

Is SOAR required for Freshman?
SOAR is a required program for all incoming freshmen. It is the only way that incoming first-year students can get registered for classes and experience UNCG prior to starting classes. Family members are strongly encouraged to attend so they may help support their student as they transition to UNCG; most incoming Spartan students bring at least one guest.
Is there a SOAR program for Parents and Family members?
We offer a SOAR program designed especially for families to address questions and concerns specific to their needs. Family members will learn about the many services and opportunities available at UNCG and how they can assist their students in making a successful transition to college life. The Parent/Family program is a two day event that is designed to run with the student two day program. There will be opportunities to attend sessions apart from your student, and sessions where you may attend together. Please visit the Freshman Parent/Family Program details by clicking here.
Are freshmen required to stay overnight on campus during SOAR?
Yes, the Freshman SOAR program is a two day event and freshmen students are required to attend both days in full and stay overnight. The accommodations are provided at the Phillips-Hawkins residence hall.
Are family members required to stay on campus?
Although Freshman SOAR students are required to stay overnight on campus, family members may choose to stay overnight on campus or make other arrangements. If guests stay on campus, they will be housed in Moore-Strong Residence Hall for an additional fee.
May students stay with family members?
No, students are required to stay overnight during SOAR on-campus in Phillips-Hawkins Residence Hall. Family members may spend the night off campus or choose to pay the additional accommodation fee to be housed in Moore-Strong Residence Hall.
Are young siblings/family members allowed to attend?
The transition to college is an exciting time for the entire family; however, we recommend that young children do not attend. Our program is not designed to accommodate the unique needs and interests of younger people. Also, students cannot bring friends to SOAR. There are no programs or housing options available for friends, and friends will not be able to accompany students throughout the program.
Can freshmen bring friends to SOAR?
Students cannot bring friends to SOAR. However, we encourage students to bring someone who will provide ongoing support throughout their college career. Most students bring at least one family member guest, such as a parent, spouse, or other adult family member. (NOTE: Due to the nature of the program, children are discouraged from attending SOAR.)
What is a New Student Fee?
All freshmen are assessed a mandatory non-refundable New Student Fee of $117. This fee is automatically added to the student account once the student has registered for classes. You will not receive a separate bill for the student program. (Please note: The charge for the Parent/Family program must be paid in advance and cannot be applied to the student account.)
Is there a fee for Parents and Family members to attend SOAR?
Yes. Please visit the link for FEES by clicking here.)
How do I make my reservation for SOAR?
Incoming freshman, transfer or adult students must make reservations for themselves and for their family members online using UNCGenie. Get tips at How to Make Your Reservation for SOAR.
How can I find out more information about UNCG and the parent/family resources for the college transition?
Visit the Parent/Family Association Web site to find out more how to join the association as well as access additional resources.

More Common SOAR Questions

Is the schedule on the Web site the complete schedule?
No, this simply gives you an idea of the beginning and ending times. A more detailed schedule will be given to students and families at SOAR. Please plan to stay until the end of day 2 and make sure all travel arrangements are planned for AFTER the end of SOAR. We cannot make arrangements for students to see academic advisors any earlier than scheduled.
Are Foreign Language Placement Exams offered during SOAR?
French, Latin and Spanish foreign language placement exams are offered during SOAR for all freshmen. More information will be provided at SOAR about the exams; please come prepared to take an exam as most students will need to do so.
What is the EUC?
EUC is the Elliott University Center, home to the UNCG Bookstore, Food Court, UNCG FirstCard Center, and many student services offices. You will spend most of your time at SOAR in the EUC.
How do I request assistance or find out more information about the Office of Disability Services?
Please contact Orientation & Family Programs if you have any individual needs during SOAR relating to a disability. You may also contact UNCG’s Office of Disability Services.
What should I do if I am traveling from a long distance?
If traveling from a long distance, remember to set aside extra time to allow for traffic, emergencies, or flight delays in order to arrive at SOAR on time. Consider staying in a hotel the night before SOAR so you can arrive on time and well rested. If you are an out-of-state student, be sure to contact our office for more information on addressing your unique needs.
Once I check out of the residence hall on the morning of day 2, what do I do with my luggage?
There is no storage space in the EUC after check out; please take your luggage to your car once you have checked out.
