Parent and Family Freshman SOAR Program - Fall 2009

At UNCG, we recognize that families are also in transition when students begin college. An orientation to campus life at UNCG is important to help families support their students through the various changes and experiences they will encounter. Although students need to make their own decisions, they also need support. We offer a complete SOAR program designed especially for parents and adult family members. To address questions and concerns, families will be able to talk with current UNCG students, faculty, and staff. Family members will also learn about the many services and opportunities available at UNCG and how they can assist their students in making a successful transition to college life and UNCG.

The Parent and Family Freshman SOAR dates for June 2009 and August are listed below. These dates are designed to coincide with your student's SOAR session. Please select the one that best fits you and your student's schedule and reserve your session today. SOAR is a 2-day program and students must attend both days in order to register for classes. The June Parent and Family program is also designed as a full 2-day program. The August SOAR sesion is one day for parents and families; however, the August SOAR session for students is a two day program. Please note that SOAR is required for all incoming Freshman and each session has a limited number of spaces. Once sessions are full, they will be closed. We do not take a waiting list for sessions and we cannot add anyone to a session once it is full.

* Attention all family members attending the Parent and Family August SOAR Freshman session: The August Parent and Family SOAR program differs greatly from the June Parent and Family SOAR program, please note the seperate Fees, Housing, and Schedule menu options for August, located on the right side of this page.

During June SOAR, Freshmen are required to stay overnight on campus in a student designated residence hall. Parents or family members of students may stay on campus in a guest designated residence hall for an additional fee.

During August SOAR, we are unable to provide on campus accommodations for parents and family members or students, unless the student will be living on campus during the academic year. Students living on campus may need to contact the Office of Housing & Residence Life regarding an early move-in date. Please see the Parent and Family Accommodations link from the menu located on the right for additional information about accommodation options for both June and August sessions. The menu also lists links to all SOAR details.

Bringing young Children and Friends
The transition to college is an exciting time for the entire family; however, we recommend that young children do not attend. Our program is not designed to accommodate the unique needs and interests of younger people. Additionally, each guest is required to pay the guest fee to attend SOAR, regardless of age. Students cannot bring friends to SOAR. There are no programs or housing options available for friends, and friends will not be able to accompany students throughout the program.

Attention out-of-state families!
Being an out-of-state student is a unique and exciting experience. In recognition of you and your student's varying needs, we offer unique programming just for you. Click here for information especially for out-of-state students and families.
