Did you know…?

The daisy is the University flower, chosen by the Class of 1893, and is the source of the original School colors, gold and white. Navy was added for contrast in 1987.

Although the university was established in 1891, it opened on October 5, 1892, with a student body of 223 and a faculty of 15. Classes were organized in three departments: business, domestic science, and teaching. Learn more

In the past century the University has evolved in its mission, as suggested with its sequence of names. It was known first as the State Normal and Industrial School, and after 1896 as the State Normal and Industrial College until 1919. During the period 1919–1931 it was known as the North Carolina College for Women, and became the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina from 1932 to 1963. It is warmly remembered as “the WC” by its many alumnae of the period. Learn more

Welcome to SOAR 2009!

2008 SOAR

Spartan Orientation, Advising & Registration (SOAR) is UNCG’s orientation program for all undergraduate students and their families. SOAR is an interactive program for incoming students and families to meet with an advisor, register for classes, learn about campus resources, experience the UNCG environment, and much more!

As you enter a new academic environment, you may experience feelings ranging from apprehension to excitement. SOAR is required for all incoming undergraduate students because we believe so strongly that your participation in SOAR will significantly improve your transition to college life.

At SOAR, students and families will learn tips to aid in the college transition process. Faculty members, administrators, advisors, and current students will present a wide spectrum of information including academics, class selection, campus resources, meal plan options, and co-curricular opportunities. We invite you to attend the programs, ask questions, and open yourself to the discovery of new people and ideas.

Follow the links in the menu to the left to learn all about the program that is appropriate for you. Once you’ve familiarized yourself with SOAR, choose the session that best fits your schedule and make your reservation online.

  • Freshmen
  • At SOAR, new students become a part of UNCG by interacting with other students, faculty, and staff in small, informal groups. Students will plan an academic program with an advisor, complete all registration procedures, and experience the unique UNCG atmosphere.

  • Transfer and Adult Students
  • Transfer and Adult Student SOAR is offered to acclimate students coming from other institutions and first-time adult students to the unique culture and operations of UNCG. All transfer and adult students are required to attend SOAR.

  • Parents and Family Members
  • At UNCG, we recognize that families are also in transition when students begin college. An orientation to campus life at UNCG is important to help families support their students through the various changes and experiences they will encounter. Although students need to make their own decisions, they also need support. We offer a complete SOAR program designed especially for families. To address questions and concerns, families will be able to talk with current UNCG students, faculty, and staff. Family members will also learn about the many services and opportunities available at UNCG and how they can assist their students in making a successful transition to college life and UNCG.
